It is a pilgrimage destination revered by not a single but multiple religious communities, Hindus and Sikhs being the most frequent visitors. Also known as Lokpal Lake, Hemkund is a sacred tank in the state of Uttarakhand, located at an altitude of 4,329 m. The pilgrimage site can be accessed by undertaking a steep trek of 6 hours from Ghangharia. The lake of Hemkund is fed by glaciers from the Hathi Parvat and Saptrishi peaks. During their tour to Hemkund, tourists and pilgrims can pay a visit to the Sikh Gurudwara and Lakshman Temple, standing on banks of the lake. Sikhs believe that it is the banks of the Hemkund where Guru Govind Singh, the 10th Guru of Sikhism, spent his time meditating. On the other hand, the Hindu mythology maintains that Lakshman, the younger brother of Ram (hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana), has also meditated by the lake and restored health after being injured in a battle against Meghnath, son of demon king Ravana.

Hemkund does not provide you with any lodging or accommodation options. Accommodation can be arranged only at Ghangaria (also known as Gobind Dham), located at a distance of 275 km from Rishikesh. Visitors are advised to return to Ghangaria by nightfall to avoid any inconvenience during their tour to Hemkund Sahib. From India's capital city of Delhi, Hemkund is an 18 hours drive. If you prefer to travel by train, you can first catch a train from Delhi to Haridwar and then take a bus to Ghanghria. Hemkund is a 19 km trek from Ghangharia or Gobindghat. Snowfall between the months of October and April makes Hemkund inaccessible for tourists.
