Auli
Located on the Badrinath route in the state of Uttarakhand, Auli is becoming
more
and more popular as an ideal hill station. The hill station invites skiers
from
every corner of the world. It is during the bitter winters that the hill
station
of Auli can be enjoyed and experienced at its best. Geographically, Auli
forms a
part of the Garhwal ranges of the Himalayas. The snowy slopes here are as
high as
9,000 ft and skiers can really have the time of their life with verdant
mountains, snow-laden landscape and the forests of deodar and oak all
around.
While you enjoy skiing down the slopes, you can also soak up bird's eye view
of
Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Kamet, Mana Parvat and Dunagiri.
Before Auli was developed into a full fledged ski resort, it served as the
training ground for the men in the Tibetan Border Police Force. A number of
legendary peaks are located around Auli. Of these, very much popular is the
Trishul, the site of an expedition in 1958. For adventure seekers, the best
time
to make a trip to Auli is between the months of November and March. Skiers
make a
beeline at the slopes in Auli from as early as 8 O' clock in the morning
till 4
in the evening.
The closest popular town from Auli is Joshimath, at 16 km. Tourists can
easily
reach places like Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar in Uttarakhand and then
hire
jeeps to get to the hill station of Auli. A part of the distance between
Joshimath and Auli can also be covered through some scenic trekking.
